2024 Report Highlights

• During the 12 months that ended Dec. 31, 2023, banks increased base salaries by an average of 4.2%.
• Almost a quarter of banks said that aside from attendance-based fees, they offered annual compensation/retainer fees to the Inside Board Chair, while 45.3% offered the same fees to the Outside Board Chair.
• Nine in 10 banks offered some variable incentives (e.g., bonus, cash awards) in 2023.

2024 Banks at a Glance

• More than eight in ten (86.1%) of respondents are stock-owned, 0.7% are mutual holding companies, 4.3% are independent banks, and 8.9% have other ownership types.
• About eight in ten (81.6%) of respondents are commercial banks, with the remaining 17.7% chartered as savings banks and 0.7% as other charter types.
• The largest group of participating banks are headquartered in the Great Lakes region (23.4%), followed by banks in the Plains (15.8%), South (14.4%), Mid-Atlantic (11.2%), Middle Southeast (9.6%), and Lower Southeast (8.6%) regions.
