ABA Names Joanna Girardin Shapiro Chief Member Engagement Officer

WASHINGTON —

Joanna Girardin Shapiro has been named chief member engagement officer for the American Bankers Association, the voice of the nation’s $23.4 trillion banking industry and its nearly 2.1 million employees. In this role, Shapiro will lead a multi-disciplined team in executing effective engagement strategies to promote ABA membership, growing relationships with banks of all sizes, ensuring the relevance and member value of products and services, and managing efforts focused on innovation, new product development, and a forward-looking view toward trends impacting the industry. Shapiro will join ABA on Feb. 15.

“We are excited to have Joanna lead ABA’s Office of Member Engagement at such an important time for our industry,” said ABA President and CEO Rob Nichols. “Joanna’s extensive experience in the business, policy and regulatory side of banking, along with her deep and proven leadership skills, will allow her to hit the ground running with our talented team. Her experience in bringing new products to the market and background in data management will also be a huge asset for her in this critical leadership role.”

“I am a firm believer in the banking industry and the critical role it plays in communities across the country,” Shapiro said.  “I am honored to join the ABA team and look forward to ensuring banks of all sizes have all the comprehensive tools, resources and training they need to meet their customers’ needs and succeed in today’s environment.”

Shapiro comes to ABA after more than 12 years at Bank of New York Mellon, where she most recently served as managing director and segment head for the US Federal Government, Document Custody and Public Finance within BNY Mellon’s Corporate Trust division working with banks of all sizes. In that role, she was also president of Colson Services Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of the bank, and managed the division’s Financial Institutions group.  Prior to joining BNY Mellon’s Corporate Trust division, Shapiro was a senior client executive for Global Client Management’s US Federal Government practice, responsible for creating and executing new business growth strategies across the entire enterprise. Before joining BNY Mellon, Shapiro’s previous roles included being managing partner of a boutique advisory firm specializing in housing and bond finance and serving as Vice President of structured finance sales at Deutsche Bank.

Shapiro is a past faculty member at Georgetown University and most recently taught Real Estate Capital Markets.  She serves on the National Advisory Board for the Georgetown University Master’s in Real Estate program, National Housing Conference’s National Advisory Council and on the Executive Committee of the Cameron Kravitt Foundation.  She is also a Past President of Women in Housing and Finance.
